Formula 1 Lenovo Austrian Grand Prix 2026

City: Spielberg, Austria

Circuit: Red Bull Ring

Date: June 26–28, 2026

Nestled in the rolling green hills of Styria, the Red Bull Ring is one of the most visually stunning venues in Formula 1. Short, sharp and punchy at just 4.3km, its elevation changes and sweeping corners make for dramatic, close racing. The Austrian crowd is passionate! Many camp on the hillsides for the entire weekend, creating an atmosphere that rivals any other race on the calendar.

City Rating: ★★★☆☆     Race Experience: ★★★★★

Our Verdict: Go for the Race

THE CITY

Spielberg is a small village in the Styrian region of Austria, so this is not a city break. The charm is entirely in the landscape: rolling green hills, forests, alpine air and the kind of pastoral European scenery you see in films. The nearest substantial city is Graz, about an hour away. Vienna, Austria's magnificent capital, is two to three hours by road. If you are travelling to Austria specifically for the race and want a city experience, base yourself in Graz or add Vienna as a separate leg.

PRACTICAL FOR AFRICAN TRAVELLERS

Late June in Styria is warm but temperatures can turn quickly, so pack a light jacket for evenings and be prepared for rain. The Red Bull Ring sits at altitude, which makes evenings cooler than expected. Getting there requires either flying to Graz or Vienna and driving or taking public transport to the circuit. It is not the easiest race to get to from most African cities, but the journey is worth it for the racing, if you’re a true racing enthusiast.

WHAT TO EAT

Austrian cuisine is interesting. Wiener Schnitzel (a breaded veal cutlet) is the national dish. Goulash, strudel and excellent coffee are everywhere. At the circuit, food options are decent but not exceptional.

THE RACE EXPERIENCE

The Red Bull Ring is a genuinely brilliant racing circuit. Short, punchy and set among stunning scenery, it generates close, exciting racing almost every year. The banked corners create interesting aerodynamic challenges and the elevation changes make for spectacular viewing. The Dutch crowd (hardcore Max Verstappen fans) that travel here in their orange thousands create one of the loudest and most passionate atmospheres on the calendar. If you love racing, this is one of the best circuits to attend.

THE HONEST WORD

Getting to Spielberg from Africa is logistically demanding, it requires multiple connections and ground transport. The surroundings are beautiful but limited for those who want a city experience alongside the race. Go purely for the racing and it will not disappoint.
