Our Verdict: Go for the City + the Atmosphere
THE CITY
Mexico City is one of the great metropolises of the world and one of the most underrated race destinations on the calendar. A city of 21 million people, it is culturally overwhelming in the best possible way. Expect extraordinary food, pre-Columbian history, colonial architecture, world-class museums, a thriving arts scene and nightlife that goes all night. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Frida Kahlo's Blue House is here. The Lucha Libre wrestling is genuinely spectacular. For African visitors, Mexico City carries a particular resonance, as it is a city with deep Indigenous roots that has built a proud, complex and vibrant culture on its own terms.
PRACTICAL FOR AFRICAN TRAVELLERS
Mexico City sits at over 2,200 metres above sea level, which means some visitors experience altitude sickness. Drink water, take it slowly the first day. The altitude also affects the cars, which is part of what makes the race interesting. October/November is dry season so expect warm days around 22 – 26°C, cool evenings. Uber is widely used and very affordable. A stamped US or UK visa would usually grant you a short-stay entry without the need for a Mexican visa.
WHAT TO EAT
Mexican food in Mexico City is nothing like what you have eaten outside Mexico. Tacos, tlayudas, pozole, tamales, mole and so on. The depth and complexity of the cuisine is staggering. Street food is exceptional and very safe. Mercado de Jamaica and Mercado de San Juan are food destinations in their own right. It goes without saying that you cannot leave Mexico without trying as much Tequila and Mezcal as you can. Drink responsibly, of course!
THE RACE EXPERIENCE
The Hermanos Rodriguez circuit features the famous stadium section where the circuit passes through the old baseball ground, surrounded by stands that create a wall of noise and colour. The altitude creates interesting aerodynamic challenges and affects tyre performance. The Mexican crowd is among the most passionate in the sport. The race itself is generally good and the atmosphere is outstanding. This is another destination where Gr1d Club hosts a fantastic post-race party.
THE HONEST WORD
Mexico City's traffic is notoriously difficult, so allow significantly more time than you think you need to get anywhere. The altitude catches many people off guard. But the city rewards those who explore it.
