Our Verdict: Go for the Race
THE CITY
Montreal is one of North America's most underrated cities. It’s a bilingual (English & French), bicultural, deeply creative place that blends French European elegance with North American energy. The architecture downtown is a mix of old stone buildings and modern glass towers. The food scene is world-class, the nightlife is outstanding and the city is genuinely friendly. Old Montreal, with its cobblestone streets and 17th-century buildings, feels like a corner of Paris that ended up in Canada.
PRACTICAL FOR AFRICAN TRAVELLERS
Late May in Montreal is mild but unpredictable. Temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C and rain is possible. Pack layers! Canadians use Canadian dollars (CAD) and the city is mostly card-friendly. Flights from across Africa typically connect through London, Paris or Amsterdam. The circuit is on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. It is accessible by metro, which is excellent.
WHAT TO EAT
Montreal has a genuine food identity. Poutine (fries, cheese curds and gravy) is the city's most famous dish and genuinely delicious! Montreal bagels are different from New York bagels and the debate there is fierce. The city's smoked meat sandwiches at Schwartz's Deli are legendary. French cuisine is everywhere and consistently excellent.
THE RACE EXPERIENCE
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is beloved for producing dramatic, unpredictable races. Its combination of long straights, heavy braking zones and the infamous Wall of Champions, a barrier that has claimed world champions at the final chicane, creates the kind of tension and incident that fans live for. This is one of the best pure racing circuits on the calendar. The atmosphere in the grandstands is passionate and the fan zones are well organised. A race perfect afterparty recommendation would be Gr1d Club.
THE HONEST WORD
Montreal in late May can be cold by African standards (a 15°C evening can feel sharp if you have just come from Lagos!). Pack accordingly. The city also gets very expensive during race weekend, so book accommodation early.
